Lacey Dodge contemplates a leap….

Matt Taylor in Boquillas Canyon

Taylor and Kevin Gilmore chat with a nervous scorpion salesman…..

It is beginning to dawn on Ben Tuttle that we have

Perhaps gone off the trail……

Street Scene in Ciudad Juarez

Another Ciudad Juarez street scene

Jenn, Paul Sutton, and Yogi (aka Victor) at the Ansell Maquiladora

(We saw how gloves were mass produced and packaged by talented and hard

working people in Ciudad Juarez). While on the tour we watched several men

working on a Sunday peeling the latex gloves off of these molds (behind us) at

and incredible rate. They looked down at us from their machine and said to us:

“Welcome to Mexico, Country of Hard Workers”. It was very cool.

The only pictures we could take

At the Maquila were outside the building. Industrial secrets cannot be revealeld….

The best mole in the world was devoured here (ask Kevin Gilmore).

We did Spend a night in the Camino Real Hotel in El Paso. The tiffany dome was quite

Impressive. Very Chi Chi Hotel but not very expensive. They had original Diego Rivera

Artwork for sale in the lobby. There were also Dali’s and Picassos for sale.

Mexico has Gated communities too. This is on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez.

Some of the students were surprised to find Wal*Marts in Mexico. In Douglas

We found a huge Wal*Mart. We also talked to people about how Wal*Mart

Threatened to locate their store just across the border in Agua Prieta if they did

Not get favorable tax breaks etc. The city of Douglas essentially had to cave

In to that pressure.

A neighborhood on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez. The houses were really small

And densely packed together. We later found out that the people were asked to

Build even smaller houses and revolted against the idea. The joke about these

Neighborhoods in Juarez is that pictures of the Last supper only have six people

In them and Crucifixes on the wall have Jesus crucified with his arms crossed over

His chest.

Crowded supermarket in Juarez. When we went back to the car we saw that we

Had left a window open on our car. Went into car to find that our GPS and

Digital video camera were missing. Fortunately Matthew Taylor saw our mistake

And merely played a trick on us to teach us a lesson. Zach still had to change his

Pants though.

Ciudad Juarez has 2.5 million people in it. The aggregate population density of

The city is much higher than a comparable city of 2.5 million (Denver) in the

United States. This is despite the fact that there are much much fewer multi-story

Buildings in Juarez. You can feel this population density viscerally as you drive

Through the city.

These creepy surreal dolls were for sale all over Mexico. Go figure.

Border crossing on bridge between Juarez and El Paso. The camera jiggle probably

Improves this communicative ability of photograph.

Ciudad Juarez from the bridge at night. 2.5 million people there.
